It's time to honor a special mother

Mothers Day may be the universal day of cherishing all things maternal, but the women of Sopris Mothers Acting Up are planning to make it a month-long celebration surrounding our second-annual naming of a Mother of the Year.

We will kick off the month by joining in the Carbondale Dandelion Day parade and festival, where we will announce the finalists for our annual award. Soon thereafter, a gathering of women will center on the naming of this year’s winner.

“The event will most definitely involve chocolate, but that’s all we’ll say right now,” says Kathryn Diamond Camp, co-founder of Sopris Mothers Acting Up, which raises most of its funds through the sale of organic chocolate truffles for Valentines.

We find inspiration from a national non-profit with long ties to the Roaring Fork Valley, Mothers Acting Up, a non-partisan political group charged with advocating on behalf of children. Our local group is looking for nominees who exemplify our mission of empowering mothers to take action on behalf of children.

To sponsor the local mother who most inspires you, please write SMAU a letter of recommendation that shares her story and passion. Please tell about her life, what inspires her work, how she is taking action, whom she serves, and what her project seeks to accomplish. Sponsors are encouraged to gather signatures of others in the community who support the nomination, and can also include any additional information such as photographs or printed materials that can help others to better envision the scope of this woman's work. Please include the email and phone number of each sponsor, as well as of your nominee. All nominations should be mailed by April 15^..

The award comes with a monetary contribution in the winner’s name to her organization, as well as hands-on support from the group’s membership.
